Session #12

Synthetic Biology: Customizing Nutrients for Aquafeeds

We are already seeing synthetic biology (“synbio”) play a role in supporting the development of durable supply chains in our food system globally, and more specifically as a platform for innovation around fishmeal and fish oil replacements, and increasing plant-based diet palatability. During this webinar, we will talk specifically about how synbio can provide the technology and tools to help aquaculture grow sustainably. Such technologies have the potential to deliver tailor-made nutrients to different aquaculture species according to desired nutritional profiles. In addition to proteins, the production of aromatics (the chemical precursors to palatant technology) is an area where synbio innovations could make an impact.

The full synthetic biology technology stack has the potential to rethink entirely customizable nutrients and reduce feed and production costs for fish farmers. In this session, we welcome synbio innovators to discuss their technologies and potential for progress in fishmeal and fish oil replacement.

Session #11

Meet the F3 Challenge Competitors

The F3 Challenge is an industry competition to sell fish-free aquafeeds using innovative formulations of proteins and lipids. The current challenge is to create a fish-free feed for one of three categories: Salmonid, Shrimp, or Other Carnivorous Species. The goal of this challenge is to reduce aquaculture’s demand for forage fish by advancing substitute feeds for the industry’s biggest consumers of forage fish.

In this webinar session we will introduce the contestants currently competing in the F3 Challenge – Carnivore Edition. Contestants have already sold a combined total of over 3,000 metric tons of fish-free feed in the first sales period for the contest. We’ll hear about their innovations, challenges, and future plans for using fish-free feeds beyond the F3 Challenge.

Session #10

Feeding Big Appetites

Over half of all seafood in the US is aquacultured. Aquaculture, farming of aquatic animals and plants, can help satiate the world’s growing appetite for seafood while also protecting fragile ocean ecosystems from overfishing. But, shortages of feed ingredients like fishmeal and fish oil (FMFO) create supply chain issues that threaten the future of the industry. FMFO depletion can also result in marine wildlife collapse for animals that depend on forage fish for sustenance.

Learn how synthetic biology is playing an increasingly critical role in the future of seafood, and can address shortages with new supply. Using synbio and conventional tools, opportunities are emerging in algae, single cell proteins, and land crops that are yielding new ingredients for feed and seafood that are crucial for maintaining the availability of one-fifth of global protein.

Session #9

Aquafeed Investors: Funding the Future of Food

Investors are critical for the existence and growth of new ingredient companies whose ingredients can serve as nutritionally equivalent substitutes for fishmeal and fish oil, that will enable aquaculture to continue to grow.

Investors can fund at many points of a start-up’s life cycle: research, proof of concept, and then scaling. In this session we will hear from aquaculture investors about their investing approaches, areas of interest, investments in this space, and favorite up-and-coming alternative ingredients.

For aquafeed companies, alternative ingredients enable risk mitigation for limited and unstable supply chains. For investors, these same supply-chain problems present potentially lucrative opportunities.
